Brazilians love long names. Our first Emperor was called:

Pedro de Alcântara Francisco António João Carlos Xavier de Paula Miguel Rafael Joaquim José Gonzaga Pascoal Cipriano Serafim

That's one person, Dom Pedro I. My mother's name is not as big, but it still has 6 words. My original name has 5:

Notice that I don't have a middle name — "Roberto Antonio" is a single compound name. I think other countries that have similar names use a hyphen, like Jean-Paul or Anna-Lena.

I currently have 4 credit/debit cards in my wallet. Each one has a different combination:

When I open a tab at the bar, the second beer is always awkward: what's the name on the card?

When I applied for my US citizenship I had the chance to change my name, so I took it! Most of my life I went by "Beto", a common nickname for names ending in *berto in Brazil (Roberto, Alberto, Humberto). I'm named after my father, who was also "Roberto Antonio", so that always felt like his name, not mine.

He was Roberto; I was Beto.

For my last name I decided to go with just "Dealmeida", the simplified spelling I've been using for many years now.

Beto Dealmeida.

And now it's official! Well, it's been official for 3 months, but today I went to the DMV and I got a driver's license with my new name (weirdly, they let me keep the old one). It looks so small! From 35 characters to 14, if you count the spaces, a 2.5x reduction!

Now to update all my bank accounts and cards!
