At the Farnborough International Airshow, Airbus is pulling back the curtain on the A321XLR to show how design philosophy has brought widebody comfort to the world’s most popular single-aisle aircraft family.

Connecting continents used to be the sole responsibility of massive widebody jets, but no longer. A significant shift is underway in the world of long-haul travel: already today, you can board a long-haul flight between New Delhi and Istanbul and find yourself on a single-aisle aircraft.

But how? In short, advanced engineering has recreated the long-haul comforts of the A350 within a smaller aircraft that boasts a range of 4,700 nautical miles. Come on a virtual walk through the aircraft to see exactly how it was done.

A321XLR, no compromises: a narrowbody aircraft with widebody space

For those frequent travellers accustomed to widebodies, an extra-long-range narrowbody aircraft might initially trigger a bit of scepticism. However, those anxieties will be quickly dispelled upon entering the aircraft, which was meticulously designed to ensure physical comfort for every single traveller.

It can be felt from the first step onboard, with elegant architecture that incorporates curved side panels, giving passengers the impression of a wider open space than a standard single aisle. In fact, three members of the aircraft’s design team won the 2025 AAIA Aircraft Design Reward for significant advancement in aircraft design.

As they move through the main Airspace cabin, passengers will discover they haven’t lost any space to the narrower fuselage: seats measure up to 18-inches wide in economy, the same standard configuration found on Airbus widebody aircraft. For those who prefer a premium journey, the Airbus Cabin Flex (ACF) design enables airlines to adapt the A321XLR layout to include luxurious, full-flat business class seats.

Worried about securing overhead luggage space on a smaller aircraft? Passengers can avoid rushing to be the first to board thanks to the optional integration of Airspace XL bins, which are the largest overhead stowage bins in their class. Allowing luggage to be stored vertically, on its side, these bins dramatically increase capacity, reducing the risk and stress of a last-minute checked bag at the gate.

Wellness in the air: creating a comfortable long-haul atmosphere onboard

Once passengers are buckled into their seats and safely in the air, they may notice that the Airspace cabin atmosphere of the A321XLR has been adjusted to bring them widebody comfort as well. To minimise cabin pressure effects on the body, the cabin maintains a 6,000-feet average altitude pressure, roughly equivalent to that of a mountain ski town. This is the same cabin pressure as the modern A350 widebody, and it helps to reduce physical fatigue, headaches and jet lag.

The sensory experience is equally refined. Modern next-generation LED lighting systems aboard the A321XLR gently transition through customised hues, mimicking natural sunrises and sunsets to help reset the body’s circadian rhythm. Temperature control is split into three actively controlled zones, and airlines can even opt for heated floor panels to give passengers an extra touch of cozy luxury. Last but not least, advanced acoustic technologies have been integrated through the aircraft’s frame to minimise engine noise, resulting in a 50% noise footprint reduction compared to previous-generation single-aisle aircraft. Combined together, all these technologies contribute to ensuring a peaceful environment that allows passengers to grab some shut-eye before they arrive at their destination.

Ready to change how you fly?

If you’re convinced that you’d enjoy the experience of flying long-haul on the A321XLR, look for the ‘Operated by A321XLR” when booking your next flight. It will be your first step into an intimate and relaxing world that enables you to cross oceans. Long-haul flight has never been this easy – or this comfortable.
