Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was in Atlanta Friday and into the weekend, and while there he issued some surprisingly blunt remarks to reporters on the sidelines of a G20 meeting, related to the status of Ukraine peace dialogue involving the United States. European officials at the G20 summit were upset and agitated that he was there in the first place, at the invitation of the Trump administration.

Recent weeks have seen the return of optimistic headlines related to Moscow and Kiev getting back to the negotiating table with US mediation. All sides have even tentatively agreed to trilateral talks, but of a 'technical' and preparatory nature, and not yet at the level of heads of state - which could happen as soon as this month.

Lavrov told reporters that Russia's demands and goals for ending the 'special military operation' in Ukraine remain completely unchanged. He also at one point lashed out at Washington for continuing policies which serve to make peace more distant.

"Our position is known, but what Ukraine intends to bring to the negotiating table, I don't know," said Lavrov.

Despite the Kremlin welcoming Presdient Trump's waving the implementation of the "Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026" - he made clear Moscow's perspective that serious issues remain.

Lavrov pointed to Ukraine actually obtaining more weapons from Western backers of late, and that these are being made ready to strike more targets in Russia.

"This kind of attitude doesn't really help much in preparing for negotiations," Lavrov underscored.

As further cited in Reuters and regional media, he "said fundamental issues in relations between the U.S. and Russia were unresolved as sanctions on Moscow remained in force and arms were still being provided to Kyiv.

Lavrov made clear Russia's position on the conflict "was unchanged from the very start of the special military operation." He then said Moscow could not accept Ukraine as a "military threat to the lawful security interests of the Russian Federation."

The most unexpected and fascinating aspect to the remarks came in the top Russian diplomat offering his frank assessment of where things stand in US-Russia bilateral relations:

Lavrov said: "Fundamental issues are not being resolved. Sanctions remain; all the sanctions from [former President Joe] Biden are echoed by the current administration.”

He said U.S. cooperation on sharing intelligence with Ukraine had grown, while arms supplies continued, pointing to a State Department announcement on Friday that it had approved the sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 missiles to Ukraine.

The charge that the US has actually increased intel-sharing with Ukraine really stands out, given it directly contradicts a slew of recent mainstream media reports saying it had been cut or at least throttled.

Apparently from the Putin government's point of view, the White House is not moving fast enough on its promises to pressure Zelensky into talks and compromise. The reality has remained that while the Trump administraiton has long talked a big game - including recent reports of First Lady Melania Trump brokering a local ceasefire in the city of Oleshky - the war is still in as protracted and stalemated a state as ever.
