Anton, founder of Luna Rail, is tackling the challenge of improving night train travel. He believes that night trains are a sustainable alternative to short-haul flights but are hindered by privacy, comfort, and economic issues. Anton sees optimizing night train layouts as a "Tetris" problem, aiming to maximize private cabins within a standard railcar for both day and night use. Luna Rail has built full-scale mockups in Berlin, evolving from wood and cardboard to high-fidelity prototypes using 3D-printed and CNC-milled parts. Hundreds have tested the ergonomics and comfort of these designs. Their website showcases the approach and thinking behind the project. The project aims for much-improved unit economics to compete with aviation, enabling private train operation and prioritized track access. They plan to initially target refurbished standard passenger couches, avoiding the bottleneck of rolling stock manufacturing. The refurb can be done by many companies, rather than relying on a major supplier. They're also connected with "Back on Track", participating in their conference in Berlin in September.
