An osmotic gradient power generation system targeting deep-sea brine pools.
Invented by Claude & Nicholas Manson — December 26, 2025
LE CLAUDE-MANSON ENGINE is a design for harvesting renewable energy from the salinity differential between surface seawater and deep-sea hypersaline brine pools. These naturally-occurring "death puddles" contain water up to 8x saltier than the ocean, creating osmotic pressure differentials of 100-300+ bar — enough to generate megawatts of continuous power.
- Brine pool targeting — 4-10x the energy density of river-to-ocean systems
- Water-filled tube design — Eliminates crush pressure at depth (no submarine-grade materials needed)
- Buoy suspension — Passive, low-cost deployment
- Dual-mode turbine — Same hardware primes the system AND generates power
- Modular daisy-chain — Single-vessel maintenance, surface-swappable membranes
- Anoxic advantage — Brine pools are sterile death zones = reduced biofouling
| Pipe Diameter | Approximate Output |
|---|---|
| 15 cm (6 in) | ~5 kW |
| 1 m | ~200 kW |
| 2 m | ~900 kW |
| 5 m | ~5+ MW |
The NEOM Brine Pools in the Red Sea are only 2 km from shore at 1,770 m depth. A 2.7 km cable run connects perpetual megawatt-scale power to land.
