Hayden Field for The Verge:

For this video, I tried out three AI interviewers myself for a range of jobs, either ones created for the exercise based on my current position or real jobs currently listed at Vox Media. Some of the platforms felt a lot more natural than others, but no matter what, each time I wished I was talking to a human instead.

I realize the job market is tough, but in my opinion, the downsides to these tools far outweigh the benefits for jobseekers. While they might be presented as a just-the-facts interviewer, there’s no flow of conversation, no chance for anecdotes that might actually help a candidate that is on the bubble, AI is trained on models with implicit bias, and this will also lead to more interviewers since this isn’t tying up an employee. In other words, they can waste your time since you’re no longer wasting theirs. Furthermore, many candidates seem to forget that an interview is to also learn about the company—I’ve had a few interviews where I was a strong candidate, but the interview changed my mind about who I’d be working for. If your potential employer is dehumanizing you before you’re on the payroll, how will they treat you once hired?
