The 1996 dial-up internet experience, simulated in a browser. You start at a desktop, open Dial-Up Networking, and get the whole ritual: the off-hook click, the touch tones, twenty seconds of handshake, and then a home page that arrives one block of text at a time.
The connection is simulated rather than faked. Pick 14.4, 28.8 or 56k and the same page really does take longer on the slower line, because every page is delivered against a byte budget at the rate you dialled at. Photographs sharpen line by line while you wait. Downloads crawl and mostly fail. Sooner or later somebody else in the house picks up the extension and the call drops.
Behind the modem there is a small 1996 service to read: a fishing page, a recipe page, a guest book, a webring, classifieds, missed connections, a weather report, a television grid and an article explaining what the internet is. There is also mail, a chat lobby, a minesweeping game, a card game, a paint program, a command prompt and a set of screen savers.
Nearly every sound is synthesized in the browser from a written score. The handshake itself is a recording of a real modem, credited in full at /credits.html. Every picture is drawn procedurally and reduced to the 216 color web-safe palette. Nothing here needs an account and nothing is stored anywhere but your own browser.
