The research evaluated the effect of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically GitHub Copilot, on software developer productivity. Three randomized control trials were carried out at Microsoft, Accenture, and an unnamed Fortune 100 electronics firm. Developers in these tests were given access to GitHub Copilot, an AI tool offering smart code suggestions. The findings, based on 4,867 developers' performance, indicate a 26.08 percent rise in task completion rate when using the AI tool.
